Two years ago, Electronic Arts’ rebooted Medal of Honor faced off against Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops. That round may have gone to Black Ops, but Medal of Honor managed to establish a beachhead from which to stage its next assault.
Flash forward to today, and the two franchises are set to square off once again. Medal of Honor: Warfighter leads the charge, just as MoH did back in 2010, releasing October 23, 2012. Black Ops 2 follows by mere weeks, with a release date of November 13, 2012. During last weekend’s UEFA Champions League Final, a new trailer (above) debuted, demonstrating just how different Medal of Honor: Warfighter is from its primary competition this time around.
Treyarch’s decision to set Black Ops 2 in the near future may be the right move for the franchise, but it leaves Medal of Honor: Warfighter as the only real choice this Fall for players who prefer current, real-world settings in their military shooters. Authenticity has been a driving concern for MoH developer Danger Close Games from the get-go. In a recent interview with Games On Net, Creative Director Rich Farrelly discusses the importance of authenticity and an emotionally compelling story to Medal of Honor: Warfighter.
“What are our core tenets? Authenticity. We’re hitting that in spades from having a guy like Tyler [Grey, spec-ops veteran and Warfighter consultant] on the project. Having him and the other two dozen guys that are helping us out, I feel like we’ve got that. We’ve absolutely gained their trust by showing respect to the material. "
A lot has changed for the new game. Danger Close is developing Medal of Honor: Warfighter on DICE’s Frostbite 2.0, the same engine that powered last year’s Battlefield 3. Additionally, Warfighter’s multiplayer mode is being developed in-house this time, rather than being farmed out to a separate studio. Nevertheless, 2010’s Medal of Honor casts a long shadow, and is sure to color opinions on Warfighter – for better or worse. Farrelly offers his take on the situation:
What do you think, Ranters: is Warfighter the game that will rocket Medal of Honor to the top of the military shooter heap? Which are you more interested in, Warfighter’s authentic take on present-day conflict, or Black Op’s speculative, futuristic setting? Which game are you itching to play? Medal of Honor: Warfighter releases October 23, 2012, for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
