Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games (what a mouthful) is the third entry in the Olympic licensed series that pits Mario and company against Sonic and his friends and foes. All of the characters duke it out in a wide variety of events to determine those worthy of a gold medal. Sonic and Mario have been bitter rivals for quite some time now, but they didn’t appear in a game together until 2007’s original Olympic Games title. Lately, Mario has been faring better with many hit games, but Sonic has not given up and is making a return with Sonic Generations.
Not many details are available regarding the newest Mario & Sonic entry, but the game is adding many new events to the roster and will be making an appearance on the 3DS as well.
The trailer does not show off any actual gameplay footage, but does showcase some of the newly added events. Check it out below.

Mario sports games that focus on one sport and inject it with Nintendo wackiness tend to be better as the compilation type of games all too often emphasize quantity over quality. The original Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games was a commercial success, but didn’t perform as well as most Mario games critically. Most critics cited the game’s controls as one of its biggest weaknesses as well as shallow gameplay and unnessacrily complicated rules. The series next game, Mario & Sonic at the Winter Olympic Games, was victim of many of the same complaints and debuted to very mixed reviews.
Time will tell whether Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games will improve upon the series’ pedigree or simply offer more of the same. Are you interested in Mario and Sonic’s latest adventure?
Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games will be available on Nintendo Wii in November of 2011 and 3DS in February of 2012.
